Computer-Assisted Vocabulary Learning (CAVL) Software for EFL Young Learners

Etty M. Hoesein

In searching for the more effective vocabulary teaching and learning, especially in EFL for young learners, the author argues for a computer assisted language learning (CALL) as suggested by several researchers. Fitzgerald (1995), for example, concludes that CALL can be used to enhance the English vocabulary skills of increasing number of students in the USA and all over the world who have been identified as having limited English proficiency. Kweldju (1995) argues that "the contrived learning of second language vocabulary using CALL commercial programs can be promising".

In this paper, the author will introduce the computer assisted word acquisition program that she is still developing which tries to incorporate the current theoretical thinking about word acquisition and the theories about the way the mental lexicon is structured and operates. Its contents are based on a systematic inventory of the vocabulary relevant to the target group. A visual presentation of this multimedia program will accompany this paper.
