This paper reports a 40-hour teaching experiment using communicative approach to 19 young learners at a state elementary school in Palembang. While Astika (1996) concluded with a gloomy state of teaching English to young learners in Central Java and Yogyakarta, this paper portrays a promising result. It discusses the results of the experiment in terms of teaching procedures, learning materials and activities, and the learners' achievement that may give valuable insights for the teaching of English to young Indonesian learners.
