Some Considerations and Suggestions on
the Assessment of Young Learners
Emilia Ninik Aydawati
In teaching and learning
process, assessment is an important thing. Loaner-Georgiou and Pavlov (2003: 5)
mention some purposes of giving assessment. They point out that assessment is
not only to evaluate learner's performance but also to enhance learner's
motivation. However, teachers may not realize it. They may only think about
giving score to be reported in report book. Some assessment given is not
appropriate due to the learners' age. While actually if they can make
appropriate assessment there are some advantages they may get. In order to get
the advantages, teachers should consider many things that relate to not only
the material given, but also the age of learners and the objectives of the
study. Some suggestions are applicable for any level of the young learners and
for any material or technique by presenting some examples of assessment for
different aged- learners and materials.
