Teaching Science to Children in English: Why Not?

Mirjam Anugerahwati

At present, the Directorate of Basic and Secondary Education, under the Ministry of National Education, is carrying out a training program for Elementary school science teachers to conduct their classes bilingually. The training is held in two stages: October and December 2003, at the State University of Malang. In the next academic year, it is hoped that Math, Physics, and Biology will be taught using two languages, i.e. Indonesia and English. This paper will look at some ways the classes can be conducted, without putting too much burden both on the teachers as well as the students. Some examples of classroom activities will also be presented.
