Materials Used in the Year One of Junior High Schools: An Evaluation

This study evaluates the
effectiveness of the English textbooks currently used in year one Indonesian
secondary schools as well as provides the necessary principles recommended for
the improvements for the next edition. The primary approach employed in this
study is an evaluation research, specifically, a formative
context evaluation research and the method fits within a qualitative
research perspective. The findings reveal that the textbook has several
strengths and weaknesses. The strengths include: the interesting visual aids
and the use of many various text types, the emphasis of communicative
activities, the balance between form and meaning, and choice
general topics' familiar to both rural and urban students. The textbook's
weaknesses are: the level of difficulties is not achievable for rural students,
the activities are not supported by appropriate instructions and some
activities do not really match to the learning objectives. Some principles are
recommended for the improvement.
