English Department Students’ Interest and Strategies in Reading Their Content Area Textbooks

Little attention has been paid to non-native preservice English teachers’ ability to read their content area textbooks. This study is concerned with English majors’ interest in reading their textbooks, and whether or not they used effective strategies for retention. Ninety-two students at a state teachers’ college in Malang, Indonesia, participated in this study by completing a retrospective questionnaire. The findings suggest that students were not very interested in reading textbooks, and they tended to use simple reading strategies, which were not effective for retention. They also confused the strategies for reading comprehension passages with those necessary for textbook reading. The reasons for these findings and their implications are discussed.
