The Need for the Involvement of Content Area Teachers in Providing Strategies for English Department Students

Are teachers of ESL/EFL prepared to help English language students to be successful in their content courses? Are we doing all we can do to enable our students to be successful in their future teaching careers? Are we working, in this information age, to prepare them to be lifetime readers? One source of help in these areas is to solicit the involvement of content area teachers. Reading comprehension courses alone are not sufficient to help students comprehension their content area textbooks. Textbook reading requires additional learning strategies or study skills. Successful mastery of these strategies will increase the level of student interest and motivation.
