Those Amazing Short Poems

Rs. Sunaryo

In this article the writer is interested in short poems simply because only a few poets have written them. Many more are made of words to express ideas, feelings, actions, the human soul, or anything else, it seems easier to put them in many words rather than in a few. But, as James Playsted Wood writes, “Poetry is an art and a craft” (Wood, 1972: 43), it is guessed that the degree of difficulty of crafting long or short poems is just the same. In fact, unfortunately we have only a few short poems. In this article, by the words “poems”, the writer means lyrics, and “short” is used for poems which are composed in no more than four lines as a complete unit, not as a fragment, nor part of a longer poem.
