Cloze Procedure as a Means to Improve Reading Comprehension at SMA: An Experimental Study

From facts concerning reading that the writer has come across in everyday life, most SMA graduates are unable to read English. This is due partly to the process of teaching and learning English at SMA. Every time the students are asked to read a passage, they are always busy with their dictionaries looking up the words they do not understand in the passage they are reading. Consequently, they fail to pick up the ideas in the passage, for Anderson (1969: 40) states that ideas are usually found at least in the phrase level reading. This weakness the students have in reading inspired the writer to carry out an experimental study on cloze procedure, making an attempt to find an alternative technique to improve the student’s ability to comprehend English texts.
