Analysis of William Saroyan’s Short Story The
Pomegranate Trees and Its Application to the Teaching of EFL Reading

Reading comprehension
traditionally emphasized almost exclusively the language to be comprehended and
not the comprehender. Failures to comprehend a
reading were often attributed to language specific deficits such as the
difficult vocabulary, grammar rules were misapplied, etc. The recent study in
schema theory, however, has shown that comprehension involves background
knowledge of the comprehender. In this article, the
writer is using schema theory to analyze a short story “The Pomegranate Trees”
by William Saroyan. Some factors are considered based
on the tendency of how EFL students usually read and interact with their
reading. The writer also gives some hints about the way we need to approach
reading.
