Literature: A Research Report or ‘Only’ Scientific Writing?

J. Bismoko

A student’s thesis could be reduced to a paper because it is considered non-research writing, and an instructor’s promotion cannot go beyond a certain level if he/she produces ‘only’ a scientific article/paper, and not a research report. For better or for worse, on certain occasions research reports have been considered superior to non-research writing. This has posed a real, practical problem, especially for those working in the non-physic departments, English notwithstanding. This article offers a point of view, an ordinary point of view from an ordinary instructor for ordinary students and ordinary fellow instructors….What it try is to provide a beginning step to clarify the idea of research and non-research writing in English literature as foreign literature.
