This paper constitutes the results of the research investigating whether there are different strategies used by students in writing exposition. It was conducted at Semarang State University with thirty students of the fourth semester as the subjects of the investigation.

The results of the research revealed that in persuading readers, students used several persuasion strategies. First, to support their arguments, they gave explanation, facts, illustration (detailed examples), and even comparison. Second, some students also stressed their arguments by giving figures and evidence. Last, they persuaded readers emotionally by drawing readers' anger and sympathy.

These results were in line with the statements proposed by Meyers (2003) that there are three strategies to persuade readers. The first strategy is supporting arguments with solid evidence, such as: facts, figures, and examples. Another strategy is giving explanation of the evidence and citing an expert or authority. Then, the other strategy is using emotional appeals such as: sympathy, anger, or even humor.

With reference to the results of the reasearch, it may be suggested that Meyers' strategy may need to be taken into account in delivering the teaching of Genre- Based Writing especially in construcing
