This
paper reports the result of a research on 15 Indonesian apprentice teachers'
thinking in teaching a reading course at Hasanuddin University.
The purpose of the research was to describe teacher thinking about their
reading course in terms of their teaching objectives, selection of teaching
materials, and classroom activities, in order to identify the teachers' beliefs
about reading and their enacted beliefs through their teaching practices. The
results of the research were intended to inform the extent to which the
teachers' beliefs and practices had helped them achieve the aim of the reading
course, i.e. to enable students to read English texts. This report first
describes the research background. Then, methods of collecting and analyzing
data will be explained. Following this, major findings will be discussed. Three
factors are focused on in the discussion of the teachers' thoughts of their
reading courses, i.e.: 1) teaching objectives, 2) selection of teaching
materials, and 3) classroom activities. A conclusion will be drawn by
highlighting some factors that have constrained the full application of the
teaching of the reading course, the implication of which is a recommendation
for training in the teaching of reading that these teachers need to explore.
