Early Lessons from
Competency-Based Classrooms
Didi Suherdi
Competency-based curriculum (CBC) is now in the initial stage of its
implementation. Many factors may influence its “fate”. Early warning of its
weaknesses as well as its strengths is of great value to ascertain its success.
Hence, studies on factors that may be contributive to
both its success and failure is critical. This paper will be concerned with critical
factors that may play dominant roles in the teaching-learning processes at
secondary school English lessons.
For the purpose of the study, five teaching-learning processes from 30
SMP English teachers from six provinces (Banten, DKI, Jabar, Jateng, DIY and
Jatim) participating in an in-service training have been selected to be
observed and analyzed in terms of their progress in developing positive
attitude towards CBC, teaching skills, and classroom language competence.
The result is hoped to show the significance of certain patterns of
teachers’ positive attitude towards CBC, teaching skills, and classroom
language competence. In overall, it hoped to show the intricacy of the three
interrelated factors in creating effective English teaching-learning processes
in the framework of CBC implementation in the TEFLIN context.
