Contextual teaching and learning (CTL) promotes critical thinking. It is in line with the principles of argumentative writing in which students have to form premises and evaluate phenomena in such a way that they are logical and convincing. The learning approaches in CTL -  problem-based, project-based, and work-based learning as well as service and collaborative learning -  are very effective to promote students’ critical thinking that enables them to write better argumentative essays.
