What’s Right with LKS?
Fazri Yusuf
The
use of lesson materials has become an important part in English
teaching-learning process at formal schools. The use of ‘LKS’ (Lembar Kerja Siswa)
– a workbook – has been replacing the role of the textbooks and has appealed
pros and cons in Indonesia.
This article is aimed at viewing the use of a textbook as lesson materials
achieving the standards for the teaching of English in response to the global challenges.
I conducted research involving three classes of a senior high school in Bandung and all teachers
of English in charge. There were 31 classes: Grade 1 (11), Grade 2 (10), and
Grade 3(10). The latest included 2 Language Stream classes, 2 Natural Sciences
Stream classes, and 6 Social Sciences Stream classes. It also involved all 4
class-teachers of English out of 6. The 2 lab-tutors did not get involved in
the research since they did not use LKS as a resource of study. I employed two
data collection techniques: classroom observation; I took different roles: as
an observer and as a tutor. And the second technique was interview; I did it to
both students, randomly, and all teachers. The findings displayed the
advantages and the drawbacks of LKS of students and teachers, and suggestions
supplied by them. The result can be a useful reference for classroom-teachers
to be aware of employing teaching materials in order to achieve the standards
required.
