Oral Presentation and Its Underlying Constraints

This paper presents part of a program evaluation study of English for Academic Purposes at the Medical School of Brawijaya University. It is a description of oral presentation class based on data collected through close observations and in-depth interviews applying participant and non-participant methods. Classroom events of ten oral presentation classes were video-taped and interviews with students of high, average and low achievers and English instructors were audio-taped. The audio and video tapes were transcribed, descriptive as well as reflective field-notes were taken. In the setting of the medical subject curriculum, classroom observations were conducted in the Internal Department. In-depth interviews were carried out with the subject lecturers as well as the students of high, average and low achievers of the academic year of 1999/2000.Data collection took place in the academic year of 2002-2003. The description of the oral presentation class involves (1) the written preparation of the students, (2) the presentation, (3) question and answer sessions, and (4) the underlying policy and pragmatic constraints. Discussion on the result and suggestion for quality improvement concludes the presentation.
