Establishing Standards for the Teaching of Listening Comprehension

This paper concerns an attempt to help establish academic standards for the teaching of listening skills at the university level in response to the current understanding of the theory of listening and global challenges. It contends that the standards need to be established since there is a potential conflict caused by the emergence of two contradictory paradigms in the theory of listening which, on the one hand have created inspiration to some teachers to develop materials, but on the other hand have ignited confusion among some others. This paper, however, does not pretend to give a-one-stop presentation on the solution, but attempts to open a discussion of how a solution for this problem can be found. It begins with the discussion of what academic standard is and the importance of developing standards for the teaching of listening. To support the discussion, a number of theories in favor of the application of the new understanding of listening theory, as opposed to the old paradigm, is presented. The discussion of how standards for the teaching of listening comprehension can be developed will then conclude the paper.
