A Popular Novel as an
Authentic Material to Develop Reading
Habit from the Early Age
Lilis Rianita
Ria Utami
Reading habit among the
Indonesian people has not been developed well yet, since the oral tradition is
still very strong in Indonesia.
In fact, by reading we could obtain a lot of benefits: widening our
perspective, extending our knowledge, and so on. In line with the increase of
educated people in number and high technology applied, people are getting aware
of the importance of developing reading habit from the early age. This study is
trying to examine the role of a habit from the early age. In this study, we use
qualitative research by collecting the data from interview, questionnaire and
observation. To analyze the data (categorize the readers’ response), we use the
measure of reader stance toward a literary work on an efferent to authentic
continuum proposed by Rosenblatt. The rest of the data is analyzed sensibly and
creatively based on the existing theory.
