Evaluating a Course Book for University Language
Programs
Rudy Purwanto
A
course book is an important component in a large number of language programs in
university settings. It serves various purposes. To some extent, it functions
as the basis for the language input students receive and the language activity
that takes place in the classroom. Its availability can play a great role in
achieving a good standard of teaching through the provision of information
about the language, teaching principles, syllabus, and a rationale for the
course. In the case of less experienced teachers, or whose English is not
strong, a course book may also operate as a form of teacher training that
provides ideas on how to plan and teach lessons as well as formats that the
teachers can use. As an essential element within the curriculum, a course book
can act as curriculum models, and fulfill a teacher development role.
This
paper considers the functions of a course book, and offers suggestions why
evaluating a course book is a valuable activity. It then moves on to discuss
the evaluation process, with a consideration of how teachers can actively
involve in it, and proposes a set of model criteria for general review and more
detailed evaluation of a course book for use with the university students.
