Strategy-Based Instruction
in Competency-Based Curriculum

Competency-based
curriculum starts to be applied in Indonesian schools, replacing the 1994
curriculum. To accord with the new curriculum, competency-based instruction –
an instruction directed at providing learners with learning opportunities that
enable them to achieve the expected competencies – is to take place in EFL
classrooms. As a matter of fact, research findings have provided a great deal
of evidence that strategy trainings influence EFL proficiency attainment. As
such, can a teacher incorporate a strategy-based instruction in his
competency-based teaching activities? The underlying rationale is that learners
will achieve the expected competencies more quickly when they have a
metacognitive awareness, i.e., they are aware of how to achieve them. In the
present paper, I will invite readers to have a closer look at both
competency-based curriculum, including its theoretical foundations and their
reflections on the curriculum and strategy-based instruction, particularly in
terms of its effectiveness from research perspectives. Finally, practical
guidelines of how to bring together strategy-based instruction and
competency-based instruction into EFL classroom activities are offered.
Hopefully, more effective instruction can be developed and implemented so that
better results of EFL teaching-learning activities will be obtained.
