To successfully implement competence based ELT  in higher education is not that easy as it requires not only highly committed lecturers and appropriate modes or strategies used by them but also other factors like intrinsically motivated learners, convenient classroom, and other learning and teaching facilities. This paper tries to present and  discuss some modes that are worth trying by English lecturers in order to help adult learners acquire English, not just learn it. Competence Based ELT is aimed at achieving good if not excellent English proficiency  on the part of the learners in that they are expected not only to possess good knowledge about English but also more importantly have good linguistic as well as communicative competence in the language. To develop two language skills--Writing Academic English and Communicative Academic English—which become the focus of discussion in this paper, four modes are suggested. To develop the former, paragraph writing, and summarizing and paraphrasing strategies can be worthwhile whereas to develop the latter, oral presentation strategies, and seminar procedures are recommended.
