Teaching Grammar and Topics Integratedly Revisited: An Alternative for Tomorrow’s ELT in Indonesia

Two issues contradicted here are teaching grammar versus teaching topics. Teaching grammar is believed to be the safest thing to do, yet it produces students who know English rules more than they use the language to communicate ideas. Teaching topics, on the other hand, may neglect the importance of grammar, thus producing students who can express themselves only in broken English. Attempting to bridge the gap, this paper seeks to incorporate teaching grammar and teaching topics. It does so by offering some instructional strategies employing which the teaching of both can be integrated.
