The S1 Graduates English Language Competence as Expected by the Stakeholders

Is the English language that has been taught so far in the formal educational institutions able to meet the need of the work force market in this coming globalization and free trade market era ? This chapter presents the result of a study in the form of a survey conducted in 2002 in DKI Jakarta of which the purpose was to obtain information concerning the English language competence of the S1 graduates as expected by the stakeholders in facing the globalization era and the free market trade. The data attained were aimed to be used as the basis for revising the curriculum of S1 English Departments. The population comprises the stakeholders in the educational institutions and non educational institutions who employ the S1 graduates of the English departments and the S1 graduates of the English departments at their work places. The sampling technique was stratified random sampling. The research instrument was a structured questionnaire and an interview schedule. The result of the study reveals that nowadays the S1 graduates of the English departments have to be equipped with a plus competence of the English language that is applicable to meet the need of the society in this rapid advancing technology and also to meet the need for the mastery of life skills.
