Introducing Culture in ELT Classroom:
Experience in the Teaching of Pronunciation and Speaking

It will be very interesting to introduce cultural
understanding such as American or British cultures in the early semesters
before students have to choose their major. In this chapter, I will discuss my
experience in teaching pronunciation and speaking using material related to
culture teaching. In pronunciation class, students will learn and get used to
various kinds of pronunciation from American films. For example, from Smoke Signal the students learn
different pronunciation of the American people speaking English. They also
learn about American culture and the conflict between the white American people
and the native American people. Learning about the
language is learning about the culture. In addition, the students can learn the
various types of pronunciation through audio book of poetry where the poet reads
his or her own poetry. This way, the students learn to get used to the American
black people’s accent in speaking English. In speaking classes, the students
watch the movies and discuss the movies within groups. It can be seen if the
students can catch the plot of the movie by listening to the characters’
dialogues with various kinds of accent in speaking English.
