Problematic Issues of ELT in Indonesia

This chapter discusses how English teachers as well as curriculum developers in Indonesia may feasibly develop and maintain a motivating and culture-sensitive model of communicative language teaching approach in Indonesia. It also discusses the importance of comparing local English language teaching (ELT) practices with other ELT practices in East Asian countries and, more importantly, of learning from these countries on how they develop a better ELT practices. This chapter explores the major ELT problems in Indonesia, the nature of ELT in East Asia, the teaching and learning culture in Indonesia, the nature of ELT and learning motivation in Indonesia, and the nature of ELT approach in Indonesia. This chapter concludes by suggesting that communicative language teaching approach is feasible to be adopted in Indonesia, in that it best be exhausted by considering the factors such as students as well as teachers’ motivation in ELT which includes the understanding of the teaching and learning strategies used and, more importantly, the awareness of the local culture where ELT takes place.
