ELT in Indonesia in
the Context of English as a Global Language
Iwan Jazadi
This chapter reviews the issues associated with English
language teaching (ELT) in Indonesian high schools as informed by current
literature and observations on learning English as a global language. First, I
will cover the development of ELT in this country since its independence. Next,
I will discuss the international spread of English, in particular focusing on
its availability in EFL settings. Then, I will discuss three implications of
the global status of English for EFL classroom in Indonesia. As a result of the
ubiquity of English outside the classrooms, learning materials can be
relatively easily accessed and therefore learners should be encouraged to be
more independent and responsible for their learning. Furthermore, as English
can no more be associated with any particular group of speakers, a
multicultural and transcultural approach to teaching
English must be considered. Last, in conjunction with the two paradigm changes,
curriculum and materials design can no more rely on one specific top-down
teaching methodology, so flexibility and eclecticism should feature in the
post-method era.
