Pragmatic Use of
English Forms of Address by Javanese Students of EFL
Yazid Basthomi
This chapter
reports a study exploring the pragmatic use of English forms of address by
Javanese students of EFL. A pilot study was undertaken involving sixteen
Australian and seven Javanese students in Perth.
For English norms used in the data analysis, the Australian students were asked
to complete a cloze test developed from Bernard Shaw’s play, Mrs. Warren’s Profession, with English
forms of address. As a reference of Javanese forms of address, the Javanese
students were asked to supply the same cloze test with forms of address in
Javanese. The subjects of this study were Javanese students of the English
Department of the State University of Malang. The
results showed that the use of English forms of address by Javanese students
were similar to that of Australian students with regard to ‘title plus last
name’, ‘title plus first name’, and ‘complete name’. However, the Javanese
students were aberrant with regard to the uses of ‘last name’ and ‘modified
first name’. This study suggests that Javanese students seem to lack pragmatic
knowledge of English forms of address. Implications for EFL teaching are
discussed and recommendations for future research are put forward in the
concluding parts of this chapter.
