Improving Short Teacher Training Courses:
Finding the Ideal Balance
Sisilia S. Halimi
Quite a number of private English language schools in Indonesian run short teacher-training courses to train their own teachers and the general public. Unfortunately these courses are determined by market-driven nature of ELT in the private sector. The contents of the courses are different from one language school to another. Each one has the liberty to decide what and how to teach. Since most scholars agree that initial teacher education programs hould be based on an “ideal teacher profile”, designing cthe courses without a clear target in knowledge and behaviour is often at the expense of the quality of teacher preparation and hence, the quality of teaching. In this paper I am proposing some measures that should be taken to improve the quality of these courses. While trying to offer some changes to improve the quality of these courses, I do not neglect the actual conditions, needs and demands of the ELT market in the private sector.
