Supervision for EFL
Teachers in Indonesian Schools
Muhammad Handi Gunawan
This paper reports on an intensive teacher-training workshop
designed to develop teachers’ confidence in their ability to teach English
communicatively. Specifically we detail the development, implementation, and
evaluation of an annual five-day workshop on communicative language teaching –
now in its third year – for approximately 500 Japanese teachers of English
working in high schools and junior high schools. We highlight the principles
guiding the curriculum of the workshops, describe the instructional system, and
provide examples of materials. We draw on both quantitative and qualitative
methods of data collection and analysis – surveys, daily journal, reflections,
focus group discussions, and pre-and post-questionnaires – to assess
participants’ perceptions of the workshop and reflect on its strengths and
weaknesses. We conclude by articulating a number of recommendations for second
language teacher education from our experience of the workshop, which may be of
interest to others engaged in supporting language development of teachers in
other contexts throughout the Asian region.
