English Teacher Education in Indonesia: How It Responds to Change

J. Bismoko

English teacher education in Indonesia is no exception in confronting rapid change, obligatory and optional, internally and externally driven, academic and managerial. One type of change which is probably characteristically Indonesia is the fast growth of newly founded teacher training institutions, which the English education or applied linguistic department is part of. On a more general ground, new education issues keep rolling, such as quality assurance and etacher certification. All this, coupled with the large coverage of geographical areas of characteristically varied sub-cultural background, makes it hardly beneficial to attempt for any accurate generalization. This paper, therefore, while touching upon general educational basis, will emphasize on discussing the change mechanism of English teacher education institutions, highligting their responses to two types of particularly English-related and ongoing change in ndonesia: the competency-based curriculum and the wider roles of English in school and society.
