Teacher Development for Islamic Schools: Making Up for Lost Time
Caroline Bentley
English language teachers in Islamic schools in Indonesia
are the focus of a new development initiative funded by AusAID under the title
Islamic Schools English Language Project (ISELP). The project aims to
strengthen the English language proficiency and the teaching skills of teachers
working in madrasah and pesantren. Australian advisers posted to
provincial schools in East Java work with teachers,
assisting them to meet the demands of the new competency-based curriculum. As
the education adviser to the project I work with both the advisers and with the
teachers on various training/development activities. This paper describes the
activities and analyses the outcomes of the teacher development activities to
date.
