Scoring Rubrics for Speaking Assessment in the
Secondary School EFL Classroom
Nur Mukminatien
The newly implemented 2004
English Curriculum in Indonesia
requires the teachers to employ authentic assessment in addition to the
conventional formal test. For most teachers, however, the most difficult or
confusing step of the assessment centers around the scoring procedure to
provide valid and reliable judgment. This paper presents models of scoring
rubric for speaking assessment in the Secondary School EFL classroom, which
helps the teachers collect adequate samples of students' performance. The
alternative rubrics presented in this paper accommodate two major approaches:
the analytic and holistic approach. The first provides information on the
aspects of the students' strengths and weaknesses as shown in the scores of the
features of the speaking skills, while the second serves as supplementary data
for overall evaluation at the end of the course. Thus, the two approaches
contribute to the improvement of the teaching practices but they may serve
different purposes in evaluation.
