Developing Learner Oral Communication:
Intercultural Perspective
Luciana
As English is getting more widely used among non-native speakers throughout the globe, its spread sheds light on a new dimension in its sociolinguistic and sociocultural aspects. Therefore, a model of speaking positing native speakers of English as a sole reference cannot be fully justified. The model inevitably should take into account the intercultural dynamics emerging from non-native speaker interactions. This study argues that the teaching of oral communication should be oriented to the development of culturally interactional skills. This means learners are to be equipped with a model of analysis sensitizing their awareness of contextual and sociocultural facets of a communication. Serving as the content schemata, this knowledge should be facilitated with skills of interaction covering negotiation of meaning and management of interaction.
