Strategic Training for Coherence in Economic Texts: Classroom Practice

This paper discusses strategic training to help students understand coherence in economic texts. The students in question are EFL students who take English for Academic Purpose (EAP) courses at the Faculty of Economics at Tarumanegara University, Jakarta. The strategic training is based on the assumption that the direct involvement of students in selecting authentic course materials and intensive exposure to the discourse of economic texts in reading practice can activate students’ knowledge of the way in which the content of connected texts hangs together. This knowledge can in turn help them to have better comprehension of economic texts.
