Teaching Writing Using an Electronic Portfolio through a Mailing List

After several semesters of teaching writing using portfolios, and last semester using an e-portfolio in the multimedia laboratory, I am now teaching expository writing using a mailing list, i.e. [email protected]. The purpose of using the mailing list is so that every student is able to read not only his/her own writing, including comments given, but also works written by peers’ and comments given to them. The mailing list also enables them to read “the structural works” and learn how to revise their own. With 22 students in class, the accumulated postings are close to 1000, a very extensive database to analyze. Therefore, I have analyzed improvement of 27% of the upper level (6 students) and 27% of the lower level (6 students) and described the imrpovements occurring in their writing.
