Using Internet Sources for Essay Writing:
Exploring Australian and Indonesian Students'
Perspectives
Bambang Yudi Cahyono
This
paper reports part of the results of a broader research study on attitudes of university
students from two culturally different countries. Questionnaires were
distributed to 15 Australian and 15 Indonesian students of a university in Australia to explore their
attitudes toward Internet plagiarism and their understanding of plagiarism. A
smaller number of students from each group were involved in focus group
interviews. The results of the questionnaire show that students from both
groups were not different in terms of attitudes: They disagree with Internet
plagiarism. Focus group interviews show that students have different
perspectives on what constitutes plagiarism and how they write an essay using
Internet sources. This
paper also discusses possible approaches, both pedagogically and
institutionally, to familiarize students with the notion of plagiarism and how
to write an essay using Internet sources.
