There were times when writing instruction was aimed at students’ being able to produce writings to meet the criteria set by the teacher without the students’ being given enough time to revise their work. What mattered was the writing product. Such instruction undoubtedly deprives student of various rights: their interest in topics to write on, adequate time to do their writing to achieve the expected result, motivation to write, development of critical thinking skills, etc. Times are now changing. There have been suggestions as to how the teacher can best teach writing employing what is known as the process-oriented approach, by which students are empowered to revise their writing through multiple drafts with the guidance of their teacher before they eventually produce their final product. This paper, therefore, attempts to reveal this process-oriented approach to writing instruction exemplifying argumentative essay writing, which we adopt at LBPP-LIA Bandung. It will reveal why we choose argumentative essay writing, what argumentative writing really is, how students go about it, what advantages it offers, what problem it poses, and what solution can be proposed to solve the problems.
