Portfolio Assessment
for EAP Medical Students at Brawijaya University, Malang
Emalia Iragiliati Sukarni
The demand to carry out a correct
medication for the patient and possessing a good command of English
communication skills can be seen during a direct one to one basis conference
with the medical specialists. This paper reports a qualitative study on the English
language communication skills proficiency of medical students at Brawijaya University, assessed during the clerkship
program at the pediatrics and internists departments.
The assessment in the pediatricts department covered
their bedside teaching manner and the assessment in the internist department
involved case studies presentations. The assessment was done in the form of
recording of students’ presentation and was done daily for two months. The
recorded data were transcribed and collected in portfolios that aimed at
monitoring the progress of their English communication skills proficiency. The
evaluation emphasized students’ English communication skills and not their
medical competence. The significance of this report is that portfolio
assessment is assessing not only the medical students’ communication skills in
scientific English: Medical, but also intercultural considerations on how to
approach the patients attentively as a medical doctor. It is also found that in
line with their progress in scientific English, in this case the medical field,
the medical students’ communication skills in English progressed as well.
