Using Poetic Texts in English Learning Classroom as an Enhancement of Students’ Literacy

Poetic texts may be a good resource for students in an English classroom. Students may enrich their knowledge of imagery and figure of speech by reading some poetic texts in the classroom. Haiku is one kind of poetic texts that is good for students that wish to read and study more fun poetic texts. Despite their brief form, haiku is rich of imagery that is interesting to read and study. In accordance with students’ reading of haiku, they need also learn to construct their own haiku. Reading and writing are components of literacy. Reading haiku poetic texts and constructing haiku texts are some activities that will develop students’ prose literacy. By following the models of haiku, students can practice constructing their haiku by using poetic devices such as imagery and figures of speech.
