The Awareness of  Providing the Strategic Competence in the Conversation Models in the Textbook for High School Students

This article is written based on the research concerning the strategic competence of the conversation models provided in the English textbooks for high school students in Semarang. It is done since this very strategy is crucially important especially by a speaker of a foreign language, just as the Indonesian speaks English, but it is likely to be ignored by the writers of English textbooks.

The data are the conversation models taken out of the English textbooks used by students of both junior and senior high schools written based on Curriculum 2004. The conversations are analyzed through their  they respective strategic competence available.

The results prove that just a very few of the models take into account the strategic competence offered by the communicative competence model of Celce Murcia, et. al. (1995). This might be one of the problems why just a few students know how to solve the communication breakdown occurs when conversing in English. Hopefully book writers can  take advantage of the results so that the textbooks, can create literate students.
