Current Methodology in EFL:
Some Techniques to Make Shy Students Active
Arida Diani
Making diffident
students more active in classroom is not an easy work to do. This is even more
difficult if the class is dominated by active students who are rather
aggressive. Nevertheless, it is not impossible to make quieter students speak
more or at least speak as often as the others in the classroom. There are
simple classroom activities which are more like fun activities than studying
for the students. The activities hopefully will not burden the students or make
them tense since they will have fun in doing the assignments. Peer correction
is encouraged and the teacher acts as a facilitator. Indeed, shy students could
actually do more than just listen to their peers and teacher. In this
presentation, I will describe the problem that I had with one of my classes,
explain the techniques I have used in dealing with the problem, and demonstrate
how to carry out the activities. There will also be a discussion to invite
suggestions from the participants and a question and answer session at the end
of the presentation.
