The Practices of English as Mediated Language Instruction by Subject
Specialists:
Case Study at Faculty of Economics of
Lucy Suraiya
This case study examines the extent to which subject specialists construe classroom English mediated instruction and how they are prepared for working with a competency-based approach. Data was collected through classroom observation and ethnographic interview. The emphasis in data analysis is on in-depth description, analysis and interpretation. The analysis is concerned with how lecturers are able to formulate a set of competencies and particular aspects of classroom instruction related to the nature and characteristics of the students and social context. It is found that the success of this course is highly dependent not only on academic study strategies but also on how well lecturers are able to provide effective ways for students to engage their own background knowledge in class activities and in testing practices.
