Assessment in Competency-Based English Language Teaching: Bridging the
Gap
Danny Wira Dharma
The
implementation of the competency-based curriculum (CBC) in the realm of English
language teaching in Indonesia has been accompanied by
considerable uncertainty in several aspects. In particular, teachers are
perplexed as to how they should assess students’ competencies : (1) what
criteria should teachers apply when assessing students’ language competencies,
(2) what or whose English proficiency should they use as a benchmark, given the
fact that while it is an international language English is also merely a
foreign language in Indonesia, and (3) what steps should teachers take to
maintain validity and reliability when constructing assessment tasks in this
student-oriented instruction. This paper examines ways of addressing these
concerns, especially in the context of high schools. The study concludes with a
success story concerning the implementation of CBC in one English language
immersion programme in Indonesia.
