The English Competence-Based Curriculum 2004:
What are the Facts
Mirjam Anugerahwati
The English Competence-Based Curriculum (ECBC) has been
implemented since 2004 in some schools in Indonesia,
and in more schools this year. However, facts show that quite a few problems
still exist, related to its implementation. Several studies have been conducted
in different parts of Indonesia,
and the results have shown that some actions still need to be carried out if we
want this curriculum to be successfully implemented in Indonesian high schools.
This paper tries to put forward some findings which the writer has obtained
during the two years she has been a national ToT trainer for the ECBC 2004. The
findings were not collected through formal data collection methods in a
research; rather, they were facts "given" to her through informal
"chatting", telephone conversations, even SMSs (short messages) with
SMP teachers in several regions in Indonesia. Based on the findings, the writer
proposes some suggestions on the conduct of the ECBC trainings.
