The Role of Explicit Teaching in Improving EFL Students’ Writing

Yenni Rozimela

This paper explores the role of explicit teaching in improving students’ writing in an EFL context. It was derived from the results of a study conducted to investigate the effects of the genre-based approach to teaching writing on the students’ writing development. Even though the study did not merely look at the issue of explicitness, the results could be claimed as partly due to explicit teaching as one of the main features of the genre-based approach adopted in this study. For that reason, the discussion about the role of explicit teaching here cannot be entirely separated from the genre-based teaching approach. In order to provide the readers with a portrait of the study and the nuance of explicit teaching embedded in the teaching approach, a brief account of the study with its results will be given.
