How Individuals Succeed in Learning English: Personal Experiences

Individual succeed in learning English through certain ways or strategies. To know individual personal experiences in learning EFL is interesting as it gives insights to, especially, teachers of English. By knowing similar and different ways of learning English applied by various individuals can enhance creativity in teaching profession in that the successful strategies can be applied to help other individuals learn English. About a hundred of students, teachers, and lecturers of English, lecturers having master’s degree majoring rather than English who teach at the Undergraduate and Graduate schools of Sriwijaya University were used as the respondents of the questionnaires to find out the similar as well as the different ways that make the individuals successful in learning English. Individuals are unique in that they have discrepancies in what they like and dislike. Some inputs from the respondents were analyzed. It was found that the most common ways of learning English are attending an English course, reading, and going abroad used by the students, teachers, and lecturers, respectively. Other strategies used by the respondents, factors that make English difficult to learn, and a brief review on various ways of teaching EFL are also discussed in this paper.
