Autonomy: What that Means to the Language Centre of Hasanuddin University

Etty Bazergan

Autonomy generally means “independence”. The autonomy of the Language Centre of Hasanuddin University thus means the independence of the centre in running its activities. This paper discusses the extent to which the independence of the center has been interpreted by its management and translated in the actual day-today running of the center. The discussion is focused on three factors: management style, quality assurance, and staff recruitment. The management style of the center will be discussed from the point of view of the three stakeholder of the center, i.e. the University, The Faculty of Letters, and the Language Centre. A discussion of quality assurance will refer not only to professional practices, Administration, and finances of the center. It will also refer to resource and facilities of the centre. Staff recruitment is discussed in term of the recruitment policy set up by the Centre.
