Linguistic Errors
and Their Relationship with the Learning Development of English Department
Students
Ferry Adenan
The purposes of the present study
are: (1) to identify the types of errors students make in learning English as a
foreign language; and (2) to find out whether the semester the students are in
enforces an influence in the production of errors. An Indonesian-English
translation test was given to elicit data. The following findings are
identified. First, types of error are identified and ranked as follows: diction
(42.38%), numbers (12.83%), preposition (10.75%), articles (10.12%), tenses
(9.27%), concord (5.29%), word order (5.1%), and spelling (4.3%). The t tests
give the following results: Semester II vs Semester
IV (t = 4,266; p = 0.000), Semester IV vs
Semester VI (t = 2,199; p = 0.030), Semester VI and Semester VIII (t =
3,348; p = 0,075), and Semester VIII vs Semester X (t
= 2,325; p = 0,020). Both findings can be used as a consideration for the
management of the learning and teaching process so that students’ achievement
can be optimized.
