Missä te asutte? Where do you live?
1. A new ending: “IN” (inessive)
in a house = talossa
in a forest = metsässä (metsä = forest)
in Finland = Suomessa
in a shop = kaupassa
in a new shop =
uudessa kaupassa (uusi kauppa = new shop)
® This ending is added to the genitive stem of the word, just like the “on” case
Example: Suomi = Finland
Suomen = Finland’s
® genitive stem = Suome
® adding the ‘in’ ending = Suomessa
Please note:
(1) Mikä maa? = What country? Missä maassa? = In what country?
(2) Tämä maa = this country Tässä maassa = in this country
(3) Missä
sinä olet?
Where-in you are?
‘Where are you?’
(4) Missä
huoneessa sinä olet?
where-in room-in you are?
‘What room are you in?
2. Practice
siili = hedgehog koira = dog nalle = teddy bear (karhu = bear)
kuppi = cup (genitive form: kupin (cup’s), genitive stem: kupi)
lautanen = plate (genitive form: lautasen (plate’s), genitive stem: lautase)
pöytä = table (genitive form: pöydän (table’s); genitive stem: pöydä)
pussi = bag (genitive form: pussin (bag’s); genitive stem: pussi)
in the cup = kupissa in the bag = pussissa
on the plate = lautasella on the table = pöydällä
Example:
Missä nalle on?
in-where teddy bear is?
‘Where is the teddy bear?’
Nalle on kupissa.
The teddy bear is cup-in.
‘The teddy bear is the cup.’
Note: Use the word ‘missä’ for both ‘in’ and ‘on’.
